چکیده

A boron compound is administered intravenously to the patient, in whom it accumulates preferentially in malignant tumour tissues. The tumour is then irradiated with low-energy neutrons produced by a nuclear reactor. The neutrons are moderated in the patient’s sculp and tissues, so mostly they have energy in tumour. Some of the boron atoms absorb neutrons and then, in a very short time, release two heavy charged particles (7Li and 4He) that dissipate most of their energy within the volume of a single cell. This binary process damages the cell involved, while both the boron drug and thermal neutrons alone are to some extent innocuous to tumour and normal tissues. Since the boron concentrates in tumour cells, the cancer can be destroyed, while the adjacent normal brain cells receive an acceptable radiation dose. Until now, clinical trials of BNCT were initiated at a small number of reactors in Europe, the USA and Japan. Advanced studies on BNCT are carried out in Studies of recombination chambers filled with nitrogen for BNCT dosimetry Piotr Tulik, Natalia Golnik

New applications of the recombination method in the dosimetry of mixed radiation fields

INTRODUCTION In order to define the recombination methods, one should distinguish between two main processes of recombination of ions in gases initial recombination, which occurs within a track of a single charged particle and volume recombination, which occurs when ions from tracks of different particles may recombine. It is essential that the initial recombination does not depend of the dose ...

Finnish dosimetric practice for epithermal neutron beam dosimetry in boron neutron capture therapy

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a form of chemically targeted radiotherapy that utilises the high neutron capture cross-section of boron-10 isotope to achieve a preferential dose increase in the tumour. The BNCT dosimetry poses a special challenge as the radiation dose absorbed by the irradiated tissues consists of several dose components with different relative biological effectiveness...

Some steps towards establishing a tertiary standard dosimetry laboratory at a radiotherapy department

Background: In order to deliver the precise dose to the target in radiotherapy, absorbed dose to water at the reference point should be assessed. When the calibration procedure is performed for a reference dosimeter in the 60Co beam of a Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL), the total uncertainty in absorbed dose to water (Dw) is estimated to be approximately 1.5%. This study attempts...

Applicability of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters in X-ray Organ Dose Determination and in the Dosimetry of Systemic and Boron Neutron Capture Radiotherapy

The main detectors used for clinical dosimetry are ionisation chambers and semiconductors. Thermoluminescent (TL) dosimeters are also of interest because of their following advantages: i) wide useful dose range, ii) small physical size, iii) no need for high voltage or cables, i.e. stand alone character, and iv) tissue equivalence (LiF) for most radiation types. TL detectors can particularly be...

Design and manufacturing a CTDI pediatric phantom for CT dosimetry using TLD, ion chambers, and gel dosimetry

Introduction: Nowadays, the demand for CT-scan is increased, and this issue has become a critical subject in radiation protection, because of the risk of cancer especially for children. The quality assurance of CT images is a necessary factor that can effect on children dose. The CT dose index is an important dosimetry index in CT-Scan dosimetry. The purpose of this study is t...
